Mommy Makeover

At my Beverly Hills/ West Hollywood practice, the Mommy Makeover is an extremely popular procedure – or more accurately, combination of procedures. It is customized to help a woman restore her body after pregnancy and childbirth, and typically includes a tummy tuck; breast surgery such as augmentation, mastopexy (breast lift) or reduction; and frequently liposuction. But you don't necessarily have to be a mom to benefit from a Mommy Makeover. Often weight changes or aging will prompt a woman to seek a combination of breast and body procedures, and they are happy to learn that I can perform them in one operation.

Whether you're ready to schedule your Mommy Makeover or you're just curious, I am happy to answer all of your questions. Request a consultation or call my office at (310) 576-3635 to schedule your appointment. Women visit me from Los Angeles, throughout Southern California, and beyond.

Mommy Makeover

Mommy Makeovers combine Santa-Monica-area plastic surgery procedures such as tummy tuck, breast enhancement and liposuction to restore a woman's body after pregnancy. A Personalized Mommy Makeover

Pregnancy can cause a number of changes that affect the appearance of a woman's body. The breasts can lose volume and sag, especially if you've breastfed. The muscles and the skin of the abdomen can become permanently stretched out, leaving you with a bulging abdomen , sagging skin, and stretch marks. Sometimes the flanks, hips, and thighs will hold on to excess fat after childbirth, and diet and exercise are often not enough to make a difference. Certainly, diet and exercise cannot correct loose skin, and this can often be very disheartening to patients that are putting in a lot of effort at the gym.

Depending on your personal goals, your Mommy Makeover may include a breast procedure, a tummy tuck, liposuction, or any combination of these.

Breast Options

Some women need breast augmentation to improve the size and shape of their breasts after having children. Many others will need a breast lift, with or without implants, to elevate and reshape sagging breasts. Still others will benefit from a breast reduction to reduce and lift the breasts. Fat grafting as a means of adding a modest amount of new volume when a patient wishes to avoid implants can be an option as well. The fat for grafting can be removed from unwanted areas with liposuction, and is processed and re-injected into the breasts for more fullness.

Tummy Options

Most moms (or major weight loss patients) will benefit from a full tummy tuck, which tightens the abdominal muscles and removes excess skin and fat. Some women can get by with a more limited procedure, a mini-abdominoplasty, if their excess skin and muscle laxity are limited to the area below the navel. This allows for a shorter incision, but also provides more limited correction and must be carefully selected for the right patients.

Fat Sculpting Options

Liposuction is often a component of Mommy Makeover surgery. I typically use it to sculpt the waist and flanks to enhance the results of a tummy tuck. It is also common for women to want liposuction on their hips, bra fat or thighs for better proportionality with the newly slimmer torso area.

Surgical Details

I perform Mommy Makeover surgery with the patient under general anesthesia, administered by a board-certified M.D. anesthesiologist. The specific details of the surgery will vary with the procedures you and I select for your Mommy Makeover. Because this is a significant surgery, you may need to stay in the hospital overnight.

A Mommy Makeover typically requires a longer recovery period than a single procedure. Most women need about 10 to 14 days to recuperate. You will need the assistance of family or friends to help care for you for about 2 weeks, as well as help with childcare if you have young children. The exact length of your recovery depends on the procedures performed.

My patients experience a much more comfortable recovery than in the past because I use a product called EXPAREL®, which blocks pain for 3 days in the area where it is injected. This innovative product has completely replaced my use of pain pumps and eliminated the need for catheters and their related inconvenience.

I will provide you with detailed information about your specific surgery and what you can expect during recovery at your consultation. At your pre-op appointment, you will receive very specific aftercare instructions. Should any questions arise during your recuperation, my staff and I are always available.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I look for when choosing a surgeon for my Mommy Makeover?

Combining procedures increases surgical complexity; therefore, it is especially important to choose your Mommy Makeover surgeon carefully. I suggest looking for:

  • Credentials: For optimal results and the highest level of safety, choose a surgeon who is certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons® (ASPS) and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). Board certification shows a surgeon's commitment to excellence in training, results, and patient care. Membership in the 2 main professional societies is clear evidence that the surgeon has met the stringent ethical and practice requirements beyond board certification.
  • Experience: Make sure your surgeon has performed Mommy Makeover surgery many times and performs these complex combination procedures regularly.
  • Results: Look at patient photos and see if the results live up to your expectations. Compare results between surgeons and see if one stands out over the others.

What are the advantages of having a Mommy Makeover?

One advantage of the Mommy Makeover is that you undergo only one operation and one recovery period. This can even result in a cost savings, due to reduced facility fees and anesthesia costs. Another advantage is that you experience a dramatic improvement all at once, which is typically very gratifying.

Is it safe to have procedures performed together?

Yes, when you choose an experienced and qualified surgeon. When planning a Mommy Makeover, I take into account the complexity of each procedure to minimize surgical time and limit your exposure to anesthesia. Your safety is my highest priority.

Are Mommy Makeovers only for women who have been pregnant?

Absolutely not. The term "Mommy Makeover" comes from the fact that areas commonly affected by pregnancy, delivery, and breastfeeding — the breasts and abdominal area — are often addressed. Women who have lost a significant amount of weight or who have simply seen these areas change due to aging are also excellent candidates for a Mommy Makeover.
