At my practice in Santa Monica, abdominal liposuction is a very popular procedure for men who are in good physical shape but can't seem to shed fat in their midsections. In many cases, these men are at a healthy weight and very athletic with well-developed abdominal muscles. However, genetics can cause the body to hold onto fat in certain areas despite our best efforts. For many of my male plastic surgery patients, who come from Los Angeles and throughout Southern California, the love handles and belly are notoriously troublesome, but may respond very well to liposuction if the overlying skin has reasonable elasticity.
Abdominal liposuction is a procedure that I design on a case-by-case basis. Some men have isolated pockets of fat on their flanks (love handles), while others have a roll or a protrusion in the front part of the abdomen. Some men have a generalized layer of abdominal fat that requires a more circumferential approach. I can even sculpt the upper abdomen and the chest area using liposuction. It is important to understand that excellent liposuction results are not about removing the maximum amount of fat. An experienced surgeon knows just how much fat to remove and from which areas, in order to create attractive, natural-looking results. I will discuss your specific concerns and develop an approach that achieves your goals for a slimmer, more streamlined midsection.
Liposuction involves inserting a long, thin tube through tiny incisions, breaking up the fat, and suctioning it away. I utilize power-assisted liposuction for optimal precision and effectiveness, as well as reduced tissue trauma. The suction tube (cannula) emits rapid, gentle vibrations, which allow the cannula to glide through the tissue, reducing the force required to break up the fat. The incisions are only a fraction of an inch long, and I place them in discreet locations. They typically are hard to see once they have healed.
Most men are up and around and participating in light activity shortly after liposuction, and only require a few days off from work. You must wear a snug, stretchy compression garment for a number of weeks to help with swelling and optimal healing. I will advise you as to how long you need to refrain from strenuous activities and exercise.
For men who have excess skin and abdominal muscle laxity, I may recommend a tummy tuck in addition to or instead of liposuction.
