Abdominal / Torso Liposuction

A very popular procedure for men that Dr. Robert Cohen performs is abdominal liposuction in Beverly Hills. This treatment is great for men who are in good physical shape, but can't seem to shed fat in their midsections.

In many cases, these men are at a healthy weight and very athletic, with well-developed abdominal muscles. However, genetics can cause the body to hold onto fat in certain areas, despite our best efforts.

For many of Dr. Cohen’s male plastic surgery patients who come from Los Angeles and all throughout Southern California, the love handles and belly are notoriously troublesome. However, these areas often respond very well to liposuction if the overlying skin has reasonable elasticity.

In addition to liposuction, J-Plasma (also known as Renuvion) can be included during the procedure to further improve results. J-Plasma is a minimally invasive device that combines helium plasma with radio frequency to internally heat and tighten the skin which can help results, especially in patients with less than ideal skin elasticity.

If you’re interested in a Beverly Hills abdominal liposuction, Dr. Cohen would be very happy to answer all of your questions about your options for a more defined abdomen. Request a consultation or call the office if you would like to schedule an appointment.

A personalized Beverly Hills Abdominal Liposuction

Abdominal liposuction is a procedure that Dr. Cohen designs on a case-by-case basis. Some men have isolated pockets of fat on their flanks (a.k.a. “love handles”), while others have a roll or a protrusion in the front part of the abdomen. Then there are some men who have a generalized layer of abdominal fat that requires a more circumferential approach.

Dr. Cohen can sculpt the upper abdomen and the torso area using liposuction. When needed, the chest can be further defined as well, see the gynecomastia section for further information. It’s important to understand that excellent liposuction results are not about removing the maximum amount of fat. An experienced surgeon knows just how much fat to remove, and from which areas, in order to create attractive, natural-looking results.

Dr. Cohen will discuss your specific concerns with you to develop an approach that achieves your goals for a slimmer, more streamlined midsection.

Surgical details for Abdominal Liposuction

Liposuction involves inserting a long, thin tube through tiny incisions, breaking up the fat, and suctioning it away. Dr. Cohen utilizes power-assisted liposuction for optimal precision and effectiveness, as well as reduced tissue trauma.

The suction tube (cannula) emits rapid, gentle vibrations, which allow the cannula to glide through the tissue, reducing the force required to break up the fat. The incisions are only a small fraction of an inch long, and are placed in discreet locations. They typically are hard to see once they have healed.

Abdominal Liposuction Recovery

Most men are up, around, and participating in light activity shortly after liposuction, and only require a few days off from work. Patients will need to wear a snug, stretchy compression garment for a number of weeks to help with swelling and optimal healing. You will also be advised as to how long you will need to refrain from strenuous activities and exercise, but generally light exercise can be started 3-4 weeks after surgery.

For men who have excess skin and/or abdominal muscle laxity, Dr. Cohen may recommend a mini or full tummy tuck in addition to, or instead of, liposuction. An in-person exam is helpful in determining the best surgical options.

Abdominal Liposuction FAQs

How do I know if abdominal liposuction will reveal my underlying muscle definition?

Liposuction can enhance visible definition when strong abdominal muscles are already present and the overlying fat layer is the main barrier. Dr. Cohen will assess whether fat removal alone can achieve your desired look.

Will abdominal liposuction help if my main concern is loose skin?

Liposuction targets fat, not skin laxity. If looseness is significant, Dr. Cohen may recommend J-Plasma for tightening or discuss whether a tummy tuck would be a more effective solution.

Can liposuction correct asymmetry between the right and left sides of my waist?

Often yes. Liposuction can refine uneven contours by removing fat selectively, allowing Dr. Cohen to create a more balanced silhouette when appropriate.

How long does it take to see the final results after abdominal liposuction?

Swelling decreases gradually over several weeks, with final definition emerging over a few months. Dr. Cohen will monitor your progress during follow-up appointments.

Does abdominal liposuction help with visceral fat that sits behind the abdominal wall?

No. Visceral fat cannot be treated surgically. Liposuction only addresses subcutaneous fat located beneath the skin but above the muscle.

Will I lose weight from abdominal liposuction?

Liposuction is a contouring procedure, not a weight-loss method. Patients typically notice improved shape and proportion rather than a significant change in scale weight.

Can abdominal liposuction be combined with other procedures for more complete body contouring?

Yes. It is commonly paired with chest contouring, back or flank liposuction, or skin-tightening treatments. Dr. Cohen will discuss whether combination surgery suits your goals.

How do I maintain results after abdominal liposuction?

Stable weight, regular exercise, and healthy nutrition help preserve your new contour. Fat removed by liposuction does not return, but remaining fat cells can still enlarge if weight increases.
